MAC OSX UNIX – TERMINAL - DISABLE DASHBOARD

There may be other reasons you’d rather not have Dashboard available. For instance, if you run a lab of Macs in a school, you may not want the students wasting all their work time on the Asteroids video game widget or watching the (I am not making this up) Goblet of Fire movie release date countdown Widget. If you’d like to disable Dashboard, for either RAM usage or other reasons, here’s how to do it. It requires a trip to the Terminal, in /Applications/Utilities, but it’s not too hard to do.

Open Terminal, and then type this command, followed by the Return key:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES

This tells the system that you no longer wish to have Dashboard available. However, the Dashboard task is actually “owned by the Dock, so to make your changes take effect, you need to restart the Dock. The easiest way to do that is to type this command into the Terminal (and press Return when done):

killall Dock

After the Dock restarts, hit F12 and you’ll see…nothing at all. If you run Activity Monitor, you also won’t find any Dashboard widgets in the list of tasks, even if you had several open when you ran the above command. Dashboard has been eliminated from your system, and won’t return until you tell it to do so. You can do just that by opening Terminal again, and typing this command:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean NO

Once again, you’ll have to use the killall Dock command to make the changes take effect. Once you do, though, you’ll find that Dashboard is back as usual—and any widgets you had opened on the Dashboard will still be open.

Firstly I would like to thank  Loh Yap Kant for turning a hardcore Windows user into a Mac maniac. It is through his patience, wonderful explanations, technical expertise and knowledge in Apple that SWITCHED me.

I bought an Apple iMac G5  17" 2GHz PowerPC G5 160Gb hard disk. 1.5Gb ram. in June 2005 and these video podcasts are basically 100% my experiences on my iMac which I think its cool to share with every Mac User out there.

In the beginning it was very difficult for me as I have been using windows for over twenty years. I am a new switcher and  with The Mac OSX Tiger I felt like a complete novice. It became apparent to me that I was on my own and many of the things I picked up was through my constant desire to know more about my Mac.

My Video podcast will be 100% my daily Apple Mac experiences covering Mac Osx Tiger Tips, Mac Widgets, Mac shareware & freeware, Mac Websites, Mac Linux , Mac Rumors & Mac Technology or Apple Special Events. 7 categories to be covered one a day for  a week. It is my believe that with my videopodcast many a Mac user both new or not so new will benefit from me sharing my Mac experiences.

The video podcast will be made available daily and as I learn, I will share it with everyone out there. As my iMac is in the hall, there will be the TV, background voices and two screaming kids running about.. It is intentional that this video podcast will not edited too much as I want to share it as fast as possible. It is also to show that there is now level playing field between the podcast/video podcast pros and amateurs like myself. Practically anyone can do a podcast and share it with the WORLD!
